The festival of color "holi" is back. Holi is one of the biggest festivals in India after Diwali. Every year Holi is celebrated in March. Holi for the year 2021 is celebrated/ observed on sundown of Sunday, March 28th ending at sundown on Monday, March 29th.
Holi is celebrated across all parts of India but it is more famous in Mathura which is a part of Uttar Pradesh. In Mathura, the festival lasts for 16 days and is generally played with flowers.
In large parts of India, the festival is celebrated with a lot of colors, water balloons, and water guns known as pichkaris. Parties are often organized across the country where people dance to music and cheers each other with colors. Sweets are an important part of the festival.
Holi signifies the end of the winter season and starting of the summer season. Holi is also famous for unique food items like guzias, Dahi balle, and many more.

Why we celebrate Holi?
According to mythology, there was a king name Hrinyakashyapu who is very powerful and cruel. Hrinyakashyapu thinks he is the god of the universe but this is not the case.
Hrinyakashyapu had one son named Prahalad. Prahalad was the worshipper of the god Vishnu. Hrinyakashyapu didn't like Prahalad due to this reason and that's why he wanted to kill Prahalad.
To do so Hrinyakashyapu called his sister Holika who has the power of fire resistance. Holika took the Prahalad in her lap and went into the fire but at that time Prahalad was saved by Lord Vishnu and due to this deed Holika get burnt due to that fire.
After that day every year, Hindus celebrated this day as the festival of Holi.
The festival is also believed celebrated because of Radha’s undying love for Lord Krishna.
Some mythological tales states that when Lord Shiva destroyed Kamadeva, he later resurrected him for the sake of his wife Rati. However, Kamadeva was brought to life only as an imaginary image.
