Why we Celebrate Holi?

According to mythology, there was a king named Hiranyakashipu who is very powerful and belongs to the asuras family. Hiranyakashipu, according to legend, earned a boon from Lord Brahma that made him virtually indestructible.

In Puranas, many variations of the boon are given. The Shiva Purana mentions that Hiranyakashipu asked Brahma that he would be invulnerable to dry or wet weapons, thunderbolts, mountains, trees, missiles, or any form of weapon. The Vayu Purana mentions that Hiranyakashipu asked to be so powerful, only Vishnu would slay him. Other variations include not being slain by any living being, not at daytime or nighttime, and not above or below.

In section 14, the Anusasana Parva of the Mahabharata, the Sage Upamanyu briefly mentioned to Krishna that Hiranyakashipu also performed another penance to please Lord Shiva. Shiva granted Hiranyakashipu the boon that he would have unrivaled combat prowess, exceeding skill in the use of the bow and other weapons as well as the powers of all the gods, including Indra, Yama, Kubera, Sūrya, Agni, Vayu, Soma, and Varuna.

Ancient India

In consequence of these two boons, Hiranyakashipu becomes so mighty that he was able to shake the very Himalayas down to their roots. Ravana once tried to lift Hiranyakashipu's earrings but he was unable to do so because they were very heavy.

By earning all these boons Hiranyakashipu becomes so powerful as he takes these boons for granted. Whilst Hiranyakashipu is performing the penance to be granted this boon, Indra and the other devas attack his home, seizing the opportunity in his absence. At this point, the divine sage Narada intervenes to protect Hiranyakashipu's wife Kayadhu, whom he describes as 'sinless'. Narada takes Kayadhu into his care, and while she is under his guidance, her unborn child (Hiranyakashipu's son) Prahlada becomes affected by the transcendental instructions of the sage even in the womb.

Later, growing as a child, Prahlada begins to show symptoms of Narada's prenatal training and gradually becomes recognized as a devoted follower of Vishnu, much to his father's disappointment. Hiranyakashipu's becomes so angry when he came to know that his son Prahlada was a worshipper of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu's decides that he will kill his son because Hiranyakashipu's thinks he was the only universal god. In order to do so Hiranyakashipu tried many attempts to kill his son but every time Prahlada was saved by the mighty power of lord Vishnu. After failing in all these attempts Hiranyakashipu's called his sister Holika.

Holika had a special boon that prevented her from being harmed by fire. Holika took Prahlada in her lap and sat on the fire. Prahlada chanted Vishnu's name and in the battle of good against evil, Holika was burnt down but nothing happened to Prahlad. The burning of Holika is celebrated in Hinduism as the festival of Holi.

That is why we celebrated Holi every year. If you want more information about Hiranyakashipu's Click on this link History of Hiranyakashipu's king.

This is only one reason why we celebrate holi there are so many reasons also why we celebrate holi like due to the immense love of Lord Krishna and Radha. Some mythological tales states that when Lord Shiva destroyed Kamadeva, he later resurrected him for the sake of his wife Rati. However, Kamadeva was brought to life only as an imaginary image.

Holi Poems 2021

  • Holi aayi Holi aayi
    Rang birangi Holi aayi
    Dhum machati Holi aayi
    Baccho ki yha toli aayi
    Hath me pichkari layi
    Rang gulal udati aayi
    Holi aayi Holi aayi

  • Holi has come, Holi has come
O dear friend and my chum
    Come to my home
Or I am coming to your home
    To smear your face
    Forgetting every difference
    With coulours blue and red
    With love and affection
    That will never fade
    And will be in action
    The memories of childhood
The jolliest of the jolly mood
    Enjoy this festival
    With colours and ‘gulal’

  • Gulal – red, green, yellow and countless.
    A day’s canvas – a riot of colors.
Lively crowd running hither and thither,
Rainbow of colors, dashing from every nook and corner.
Disregarding their woe and despair fervent folks,
rejoicing at the marvel of colors.
A day filled with luster and gaiety,
A day to smear our dreams-
With a splash of vibrant frenzy colors.
Holi Hai! A spring of unbounded fun and frolic!
